On Thursday, Sept. 26, the Vulcans hosted the Walsh Cavaliers, who hail from Canton, OH. They took the first set from the Cavaliers 25-21, but the Cavaliers responded by winning the next three straight sets. This was the last nonconference game of the season for the Vulcans, who now aim to get some conference wins.
The first set went great for the Vulcans, who scored four of the first five points and never looked back. They never trailed in this set, and led by seven points at one point (21-14). They closed out the set with an error from the opposing Cavaliers, solidifying the first set as a 25-21 victory.
Sadly, the Vulcans dropped the next three sets with scores of 19-25, 23-25, and 22-25. The second set was marked by a Cavaliers 5-0 run, bringing them from down one point to up four points. They did not lose that lead after that run.
The Vulcans fell behind quickly in the third set due to a 6-0 Cavalier run, before the Vulcans retaliated with a 6-0 run of their own to keep the set close. Ultimately, the Vulcans fell 23-25, but still gave the set their all.
The fourth and final set was constant back and forth between the two teams. The Vulcans kept close but were not able to close the set out, losing the set 22-25 and the match 1-3.
Senior Allie Droneburger recorded a kill/dig double-double, finishing with 10 kills (led the team), and 19 kills (season-high). Freshman Morgan Johnson recorded 20 assists this game, which also tied her season-high in assists. Sophomore Kay Lindenfelser led the team and also set a career high by recording 20 digs.
The Vulcans now look to bounce back as they start their slew of conference games by facing Edinboro back at the Convocation Center on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 5:00 PM.
