Women’s Basketball Takes the Win Over Mercyhurst

The Vulcans Ended Senior Night with a Win

On Saturday, Feb. 24, Senior Day, the California Vulcans took on the Lakers of Mercyhurst. Final score ended in favor of California 65-56, extending their win streak to 5 and the Vulcans now have a record of 19-7 overall, and 14-6 in conference play. The Lakers fall to 16-10, and 12-8.

An exciting matchup between these teams, the Vulcans caught a break in the 2nd quarter as they outscored Mercyhurst by 12 points, which really was the difference maker in this game.

Leading scorers for both teams were Bailey Kuhns and Allycia Harris. Kuhns shot 5-9 (55.6%) from the floor, had 15 points and 3 rebounds. Harris started the game on fire, she made her first 6 shots, shot 8-10 (80%), and finished with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. She also set a season high in minutes played.

Both teams shot similar percentage wise, California shot 21-54 (38.9%) and Mercyhurst 18-49 (36.7%). As mentioned before, the Vulcans celebrated Senior Day, the team’s Seniors include Jordan Smith, Dejah Terrell, and Hayden Robinson. Congratulations to our three Seniors!

With California clinching a playoff spot, every matchup from this point on is for seeding purposes. The top four teams in the PSAC West are Gannon, IUP, California, and Edinboro. With only 2 games left in the season, the Vulcans will need help from other teams in the conference if they hope to obtain a better seeding. The 2 games remaining for California was home Wednesday, Feb. 28 against IUP, and away for the final game of the season at Edinboro on Saturday, Mar. 2.
