CALIFORNIA (Feb. 10) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team released its schedule for the upcoming season on Wednesday afternoon.
The Vulcans were limited to 16 games (4-12) last year before the remainder of the campaign was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an attempt to limit travel and maximize the opportunity to play, Cal U will play a PSAC West-only schedule consisting of 32 total games. The structure of the schedule is a four-game weekend schedule with teams rotating home and away doubleheaders.
Additionally, the PSAC now features a two-division alignment this spring with Clarion, IUP and Pitt-Johnstown joining the Western Division after playing the last four seasons in the Central Division.
The Vulcans will open the year on March 5-6 with a series against Gannon, which finished first in the PSAC West standings from 2017-19 and claimed the 2018 PSAC Championship. Cal U then plays four games against IUP, which features a new turf infield at its home facility, on March 12-13 before facing Clarion in a series the following weekend. Cal U closes the month with a four-game set versus Slippery Rock on March 26-27.
Cal U plays a series against Edinboro on April 2-3 before facing Mercyhurst on April 9-10. The Vulcans will play Pitt-Johnstown on April 16-17 for first since 2015, which was the initial year of the program for the Mountain Cats. Cal U closes the regular season with four games on April 30-May 1 against Seton Hill, which appeared in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
Due to the on-going pandemic and dependent upon state and local recommendations, all opponents, dates and times on the schedule are subject to change. Additional information related to attendance and safety protocols at Lilley Field will be announced closer to the start of the season.
