Sean Spicer, upsets and fashion, oh my!

The 2017 Emmy Awards were hosted by comedian Stephen Colbert on Sunday, Sept. 17. There were upset wins by different actors and shocking moments from the highly anticipated award show.

In leading categories, the winner for Best Comedy was “Veep,” which airs on HBO. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Best Actress, Comedy for her role in the show as Selina Meyer, a former Maryland senator.

Veep has been on television for six seasons.

The win made history for Louis-Dreyfus, who won her sixth award, consecutive, in the category. According to the Emmy’s, Louis-Dreyfus now has the most wins for “playing a single role in the same series.”

Best Actor in a Comedy Series went to Donald Glover, otherwise known as Childish Gambino. The rapper-actor stars in the comedy “Atlanta,” about a rapper and a manager trying to make it in the music industry.

In addition to his award win, Glover also created the show and writes episodes of the series, where he plays Earnest “Earn” Marks. The show airs on FX.

Glover also won the Emmy for directing a comedy, which made him the first African-American person to do so. He directed the episode, “B.A.N.”

In the Drama category, the Best Series Emmy went to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which airs on Hulu. Best Actress went to Elisabeth Moss, for her role as June Osborne-Offred.

Best Actor in a Drama went to Sterling K. Brown, for his role as Randall Pearson in NBC’s hit series “This Is Us.”

Sterling K. Brown, and the rest of the “This Is Us” cast return for their second season on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Brown’s speech was cut off during the ceremony, but he got to finish it afterwards to reporters behind the scenes.

HBO had another crop of winners, when “Big Little Lies” won the Best Limited Series award. Nicole Kidman, for her role as Celeste Wright, won Best Actress in a Limited Series.

Best Actor in a Limited Series was awarded to Riz Ahmed, for his role as Nasir “Naz” Khan, in HBO’s “The Night Of.”

Supporting actor awards in comedy were swept by members of “Saturday Night Live.” Alec Baldwin, for reprising his role time and again as President Donald Trump, won Best Supporting Actor in Comedy. Kate McKinnon, who notoriously featured as Hillary Clinton and many other characters in the comedy show, won Best Supporting Actress in Comedy.

Best Animated Series went to Bob’s Burgers, defeating “Archer,” “South Park,” “Elena And The Secret Of Avalor (Sofia The First)” and “The Simpsons.”

Notably in the show, Sean Spicer made an appearance to kick off the night. Spicer, formerly the White House Press Secretary, had been the target for many “Saturday Night Live” sketches, with Melissa McCarthy playing the role. McCarthy was in the audience, and the camera panned right at her when Spicer hit the stage on the rolling podium that McCarthy used on the show.

Colbert did what Colbert normally does, and decided to take shots at President Trump, at one point stating, “Unlike the presidency, Emmys go to the winner of the popular vote.”
