The Cal U men’s soccer team traveled out of state this past Wednesday evening to West Virginia to face the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals. The match began at 7:30pm and not long after the first whistle, Wheeling Jesuit scored the first goal of the night. After a foul outside of the 18-yard line by Cal U, the cardinals scored with 36:55 left in the first half of the game.

Only 3 minutes later Elliot Taylor, a senior captain, scored off of a free kick after a foul committed by Jesuit. Both teams continued to fight hard through the first half until a Jesuit player was injured, halting the play with 24:07 left in the half. As the game continued Cal U’s defense was strong as keeper, Lucas Exner, effortlessly saved ball after ball.

Cal U scored again at 6 minutes remaining in the first half, with a laser shot by Eric Campbell, a sophomore, and assist by freshman Antonio Simora. At the end of the first half, Cal U lead Wheeling Jesuit 2-1.

After a 15-minute halftime, the second half began at 8:36pm. With 25:55 minutes to go the time stopped for another Jesuit injury. Six minutes later the play stopped for a fourth time due to yet another Jesuit injury called on Cal U forward, Mike Cummings.

As the play continued Christian Fletcher, a sophomore, scored alone off of a free-kick with 12:08 left in the second half. Exner saved two more goal attempts before the game ended at 9:27pm. The final score of the game was a well-deserved 3-1 for Cal U.

Cal U’s next home soccer game will be against Millersville at 1pm. Come out and support the Vulcans as they face the Marauders.
