The Black Student Union (BSU) at Penn West California is marking a major milestone this fall of ten years of excellence, empowerment, and expression. To honor the occasion, BSU is hosting its annual Homecoming Showcase, a vibrant celebration that brings together students, alumni, and campus organizations for an unforgettable night of culture, performance, and unity.
“The Showcase represents growth and legacy, it’s a milestone year that honors both the roots and the future of BSU,” said Jordyn Reynolds, President of the Black Student Union. “We’re bringing back alumni who helped build BSU into what it is today and incorporating newer voices from across our organizations, including Women United, Men United, ASA, HSA, and more.”
Over the past decade, BSU has evolved beyond being just a student organization. It has become a cornerstone of creating community on campus, providing space for leadership, collaboration, and representation. The Showcase embodies the club’s spirit, capturing the creativity and cultural pride that defines its mission. For many, the Showcase is the heartbeat of Penn West California’s Homecoming festivities.
“Homecoming is all about pride, connection, and celebrating our campus community,” Reynolds said. “The Showcase embodies that exact energy and it’s where Black culture, artistry, and student expression shine in front of the entire university. BSU brings the soul to Homecoming.”
From dancers and singers to poets and student athletes, the event highlights the range of talent found within the university community.
Reynolds reflected fondly on the electric moments where performers and audiences connect. “There’s always that one moment when the audience just erupts, and you realize this is more than a show, it’s a space where students feel seen, supported, and celebrated.”
Behind the lights and applause, BSU’s Showcase is a product of student passion and teamwork.
“Students design the flyers, organize the lineup, handle sound, lighting, and budget everything,” Reynolds said. “It’s student-led and community-powered. BSU has always been about creating opportunities for people to shine in their element, and this event gives everyone that platform.”
This year’s Showcase promises new energy, powerful storytelling, and a range of performances curated to reflect the diversity within the Black experience.
“We’ve been intentional about curating acts that represent different styles and stories within our community,” Reynolds said. “Expect surprises, emotion, and a real showcase of what BSU stands for.”
Over the years, BSU has expanded its reach beyond performance and celebration.
“When I first joined, it was a space for cultural connection and now it’s also a space for leadership, collaboration, and representation,” Reynolds said. “We’ve built partnerships with other organizations, started fundraisers like our wristband campaign, and expanded our programming to include community service, town clean-ups, and multicultural events. BSU isn’t just a club, it’s a movement that continues to shape the student experience at Penn West California.”
For students and community members alike, the Showcase is an experience that leaves a lasting impression.
“It’s one of those events you have to experience to truly understand the impact of BSU,” Reynolds said. “You’ll leave feeling inspired, energized, and proud to be part of this campus.”
As BSU celebrates its tenth year, Reynolds expressed gratitude to everyone who has supported the organization along the way:
“Ten years is a blessing, and it’s only possible because of the students who believed in the vision before us,” she said. “We’re not done yet and this is just the beginning of another decade of culture, connection, and Black excellence at Penn West California.”
