Tony Mauro, Associate Vice President for University Development and California Campus Administrator, earned his B.S. in 1992 and M.S. in 1993 from Cal U. His fondest memories are the times spent with friends who remain a part of his life today.
Mauro says his Cal U experience gives him a unique connection with donors, alumni, staff, faculty, and students he interacts with daily.
His advice for students: “Work hard in your classes but also enjoy your time on campus. Get involved, build friendships, and use the Penn West and California Campus network to support your journey. Make memories and experiences that will benefit your career and your life.”
Gary M. Smith, a two-time Cal U graduate, treasures his time at CUTV, WVCS (now WCAL), and the theater.
“Working and making friends for life, I cannot overstate how fun those days were with some great people,” he said.
After earning his graduate degree, Smith was hired at Cal U, where he has worked with students for more than 20 years. He has produced over 1,500 shows and documented major moments in Vulcan sports history.

His advice for students: “Join clubs and be active in them. Don’t just sign up on Engage and disappear. College years go quickly, so embrace the time you have while here.”
Jon Wieand, Class of 2008, looks back on his time at Cal U with gratitude. His favorite memory was working with CUTV and covering Vulcan athletics, an experience that gave him skills he carried into his career.
After graduation, Wieand achieved his dream of working in the NFL before returning to campus to help guide future students.
“My time at Cal U helped me achieve personal dreams and eventually brought me back to teach the next generation,” he said.
His advice for current Penn West California students is simple: “Get involved! Your college experience will be what you make of it. Find your people, try new things, and make memories that last a lifetime.”
Gloria (Stone) Minutello earned her undergraduate degree in 2013 and her master’s degree in 2021 from Cal U. During her undergraduate studies, she was active with CUTV, traveling to away football and basketball games and making lifelong memories, including meeting her husband, Ryan.
She credits Cal U for shaping her career. Volunteering at the Convocation Center during her senior year also opened doors to her first job.
“With the hands-on learning from CUTV and the Communications Department, I would not be the professional I am today,” she said.
Her advice to students: “Get involved and network. Many employees have connections beyond campus. Put in the work, but don’t be afraid to take risks and change your path, your undergrad may not be where you end up in 10 years.”
Darrek Harshberger, Associate Director of Student Development and Engagement, earned his undergraduate degree in 2023 and will complete his graduate degree in 2024. His favorite memories include serving as Student Government President for two years and helping to bring Drag Queen events back to campus with Rainbow Alliance after COVID.
Harshberger says Cal U shaped his career path.
“Without Cal, I would not have found my true passion in Student Affairs,” he said. “I am grateful for the students, staff, faculty, and everyone at Cal, Penn West, and PASSHE for impacting my college experience.”

His advice for students: “Take every opportunity, big or small. You never know how it may impact your life. Cal has given me incredible bonds, life-changing experiences, and has advanced me intellectually and professionally.”
