The organizers of the first Cal Homecoming envisioned an event similar to those of major, larger schools. It was a way to make the campus more active and lively.

This was an event with colorful floats, marching bands, and community participation. In fact, it was the band’s first parade.
Mrs. Earl Edwards was the first chairperson of the event and had Dr. Herbert Harmon as the guest of honor.
A coach from 1896 to 1906, Harmon introduced sports to the campus. Several alumni attended the first-ever Homecoming event in honor of Harmon.

A float decorating contest was also held and won by the Glee club.
In 1950, Lucille Tharpe Karslake was crowned the first-ever homecoming queen.
There was square dancing at Herron Hall after the football game and all-day events that lasted from morning to night to bring in current students and alumni.

However, what was most important was California’s victory over Clarion in the football game.

I was crown bearer for homecoming in either 1966 or 1967. A few things I remember was how cold and windy it was that day and going to all the different sorority and frat houses.
