The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at PennWest California held its Student Recognition Awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 16th.  The event celebrated student excellence with its theme “Choose Resilience,” which showcased service, leadership, and athletic success on campus.

The ceremony began with remarks by Sheleta Camarda-Webb, the DEI Office’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, and Savannah Dorsey, a Presidential Leadership Intern. They both welcomed the attendees as Mistress of Ceremony. The Associate Vice President of University Development and California Campus Administrator, Anthony Mauro, also addressed the attendees.

A California University of Pennsylvania Class of 2019 alumni and Social Worker from Sto Rox School District, Alexandra Gariepy, inspired the audience by prompting them to reflect on their successes and acknowledge how far they have come. She encouraged everyone to be proud of themselves for their journey and progress.

“Close your eyes if you feel comfortable,” Gariepy said. She asked everyone to say to themselves, “I have made it this far and that is enough.”

The awards ceremony commenced following Gariepy’s speech, which recognized several students for their outstanding contributions to the campus community. Sarah Seader received the Outstanding Service Award, while Sierra Everett was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award. Olivia Russo was awarded the Outstanding Leadership Award. Allycia Harris and Beyonce Kelly were named the Athletes of the Year. Bria Allen, who received two awards, was the Student of the Year and the recipient of the prestigious Jennie Adams Carter Distinguished African American Student Award

“There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person,” Camarda-Webb said, quoting beloved television personality Fred Rogers in her closing remarks.

She highlighted the impact the award recipients have had on those around them, leaving a lasting impression through their actions and accomplishments.

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plays a crucial role in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion on college campuses. The mission of this office is to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their background or identity. By celebrating and recognizing students who embody these values, the office fosters a sense of belonging and community among the student body.

We are reminded of the power of diversity and inclusion in creating a more inclusive and vibrant campus community as we celebrate the award recipients. The Student Recognition Awards honor students who have made a positive impact on the campus community and inspire others to do the same.
