California University of Pennsylvania plans a series of virtual events to mark February as Black History Month.

The theme — “The Spiral of Social Justice: Re-emergence of ‘The Dream’” ­— was chosen to expand on the idea of social justice being a journey, said Sheleta Camarda-Webb, director of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

“There are big historical moments, like Rosa Parks or the March on Washington, that have brought social justice issues to the forefront,” she said. “It’s a continuum, and hopefully we are moving more forward than backward. Different movements emerge, like Black Lives Matter, and in the end, all of the movements are trying to achieve the same thing: Justice for all.”

Cal U has the following events on the schedule:

11 a.m. Feb. 4: Criminal justice associate professor Dr. Mathilda Spencer will moderate “Policing in Dichotomous Worlds’: Black Law Enforcers/Black Lives Matter,” a panel discussion among members of NOBLE, the Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives. Participants are Aaron Allen, a corporal from the Pennsylvania State Police Heritage Affairs Section; Lavonnie Bickerstaff, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police assistant chief and NOBLE Pittsburgh chapter president; Regina Scott, deputy chief, Los Angeles Police Department; and Paris Pratt, assistant special agent in charge, Drug Enforcement Agency.
