The month kicked off with both men’s and women’s soccer. The women’s team played at home, dropping to IUP 4-0. A few days later, on Oct. 4, they found themselves at the same end against Clarion, but in a closer game, they only lost 1-0. The Lady Vulcans are still looking for their first win of the season as travel commences this week to Seton Hill on Wednesday, Oct. 8, and to Slippery Rock on Oct. 11.
The men’s team traveled last week to Pitt-Johnstown, where it was a close game but couldn’t pull it off, losing 3-2 on Wednesday. The team also had to travel to Lock Haven on Saturday, October 4, where they followed the same fate as a couple of days before, falling 4-1. The boys host Seton Hill this Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 6:00 p.m. at Philipsburg Stadium before traveling with the women’s team to Slippery Rock on Oct. 11.
The football team didn’t fare any better this week, hosting Seton Hill. A rough 16-7 loss broke their winning streak and perfect record. Backup QB Phaeton Hill saw some action in the second half, going 7 for 11 for 90 yards. The Vulcans tend to leave this blemish on the record behind them as they look ahead to Saturday, Oct. 11, when they travel to Edinboro for Edinboro’s homecoming game.
To end on a good note, the Men’s golf team is finishing up the Tiffin Ryman Memorial. A two-day tournament in Tiffin, OH, that started on Oct. 6 and ended on Oct. 7. Speaking of tournaments, the Women’s tennis team finished their participation in the ITA Regional Championship Tournament. Teddi Isherwood won 4 games over 2 days. The duo of Guldimann and Mungo fell in the quarterfinals in the doubles tournament.
Finally, the volleyball team seemed to have the most success out of the team sports, splitting their road trip last week. Winning 3 straight sets at Clarion on Oct. 3, before traveling to Slippery Rock on Oct. 4 to drop 4 sets to 1. Their next game will be at home on Friday, Oct. 10, against Pitt-Johnstown.
