On April 11 2025, the CalTimes team had the unique opportunity to sit down with the Canadian-born rapper, singer, and producer, Alexander Leon Gumuchian, also known as BBNO$, during his performance at PennWest Edinboro’s Spring Concert.
When asked about his inspiration for music, Gumuchian shared, “Everything in life. I have a lot of feelings, and I always feel like I have to express them. Ever since I was a kid, the way I dealt with my problems was by sitting on my dryer and singing Disney songs and old songs. Music is what feelings sound like. It’s just a part of life.”
Gumuchian’s approach to songwriting is deeply personal, drawing from his own trials, tribulations, and emotions.
“Music is an outlet for me, and it’s how I deal with life’s struggles,” he said. “It all kind of inspires me.”
During the interview, Gumuchian was candid about the challenges he’s faced throughout his career.
When asked about the most difficult hurdle he’s had to overcome, he responded, “Probably getting sober. It was a big challenge. It’s a lifestyle that’s expected, and it became a bad habit. But overcoming that was definitely a big challenge, one day at a time.”
Despite these challenges, Gumuchian remains resilient, using his music as a way to channel his experiences into something positive.
Gumuchian reflected on his recent performance of the song “What Am I Looking For?” on Broadway in Nashville.
“It was the first time singing that song live, and it was very personal for me,” he admitted. “It felt like everything was stripped down. But after I finished, I felt like, ‘Okay, cool.’” He expressed particular pride in that song, noting, “It was the first time I really got vulnerable and showed more of my soul.”
As an artist who rose to fame through the internet, Gumuchian emphasizes the importance of supporting fellow creatives.
“People supported me, so why wouldn’t I support other people trying to do the same?” he said. “There are so many talented people out there who never get the spotlight. It’s important to put people on as much as possible.”
Gumuchian also has a playful relationship with internet culture, noting the odd yet humorous creations fans have made about him.
“People are drawing me ‘pregnant’, and I think it’s hilarious,” he laughed. “It’s just awesome that people use me as an outlet for their creativity.”
When asked about which fictional character he would collaborate with, Gumuchian gave a fun and unexpected answer: “Maybe Timmy Turner. That’d be fun. Or maybe Mulan. I love the art direction and soundtrack in that movie.” He also expressed his desire to collaborate with the internet’s favorite virtual pop star, Hatsune Miku. “I would love to do a Miku collab. It’d be amazing,” he said.
While he’s proud of much of his music, Gumuchian mentioned one song that stands out: “Help Herself.” “It’s a softer, indie rock-style song. I play it live a lot. It’s soothing and just something I’m really proud of,” he explained.
It contrasts with some of his more upbeat tracks, showcasing his versatility as an artist.
Reflecting on his time at PennWest Edinboro, Gumuchian shared how much he’s enjoyed the experience.
“Everyone’s been so nice and helpful. I feel right at home,” he said. “I can’t wait to see how the crowd reacts tonight. I’m a little scared, to be honest, but I’m looking forward to it.” He also offered advice to the audience and aspiring artists: “It’s important to have fun with it. If you’re going to create something, make sure it brings joy to you and to others.”
As Gumuchian prepared for his Spring Concert performance, he expressed excitement for the future, both professionally and personally. He continues to create music that resonates with listeners worldwide, using his platform to support other artists and engage with his audience in unique ways. With a busy year ahead, including new music and collaborations, Alexander Gumuchian, also known as BBNO$ is ready to continue making waves in the music industry.
